The Headmaster was Major Tarbottom (retd.), an unfortunate name. I had never heard it before and always wanted to see his backside to find out just where the tar was spread or, was he born with tar on his bum?
Dominican Convent, Wicklow — 1938
The boys at my school were intrigued by my presence. At that time there were very few, if any, foreign visitors to Ireland leave alone this tiny town. “Do the Indians attack you with bows and arrows or tomahawks?” “Do you get to sit by the campfire at night and sing along to guitars?” “Have you ever rounded up the cattle?”

“We’re too bloody fast to hang around with other ships.”, the captain had said. “We’ll be in a hurry, we’ll make all speed and make it to Bombay in 11 days.”. He was right, spot on target.

What they Say?
It has all the elements of an historical novel – adventures, human relationships, tragedy, with a pleasant mixture of humorous anecdotes. The use of first-person narrative, in this case, is very effective, since it traces the life of a young lad growing up in India. The writing is polished and the use of anecdotes is a way of propelling the narrative. There is little, if any, I would change in the story. The experiences encountered by the family are heart-warming and interesting to a person who spent his life in a rather mundane Ohio city and later in California. Patrick, I admire your story-telling technique and insight into the family members. It was a privilege to be the first to read the entire “Indian Tales”. I think it has possibilities as a novel of general interest.
